# 27 quote

A lot of people who are against cloning have a common reason which is cloning undermine the values of human life. In the article Genetic patenting and human dignity, the author claimed that many people would dispute the patenting of DNA sequences on the grounds that it treats humans as commodities because our genes are products of nature, we cannot claim them as an invention. Bruce, the professor of biochemistry at Duke University said “If they (genes) are nothing more than products of industry then I believe we are losing something of our humanity by putting them in the same box as widgets (Bruce, 2). What he is saying is that every single individual in the society is unique with all kinds of personalities and skills. If the scientists clone the DNA, human beings would lose the dignity. I could see some connection between this point and the Dollhouse. Instead of cloning genes and stem cells, the Dollhouse cloned personality and memory. All the dolls have lost their identity and are programmed into different people. According to a version known as principle of humanity, “we have a moral duty to treat all human beings as ends-in-themselves, not merely as means to other ends”. The Dollhouse is running a business of using people which devalues man-kind. Same with cloning: if the cloning technology started becoming big, human being would become very worthless because cloning could satisfy everything human beings ask for. Cloning is started treating human beings as commodities, so is the Dollhouse.

#25 quote 2

Today I read the article the benefits of human cloning; the article listed a lot of things that cloning benefits the human beings. Even though not everyone agrees with cloning, or believes it is ethical, there is lot of usages through cloning. Dr Simon Smith said that one of the leading proponents of human cloning technology suggests that it may someday be possible to reverse the aging process because of what we learn from cloning. Cloning could reverse heart attack, make embryonic stem cells to produce organs or tissues to repair or replace damaged ones, advance Plastic, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgery, clone any organs for transplants, etc. So he claimed that “This new technology herald a new era of unparalleled advancement in medicine if people will release their fears and let the benefits begin” (Smith, 2). In other words, he is saying to those who are afraid of cloning or do not know much about cloning that cloning can actually do a lot for mankind and people should never look it differently. Cloning is kind of like the technology used in the Dollhouse to some degree because the company cloned different personalities into the dolls and they all look alike when they are in the house. The dolls may never have such strong bodies in their real life before; however, when they got imprinted or cloned, they have more strong body to fight and completed a lot of difficult tasks to save other people’s life. Cloning is kind of good when thinking about the medical usage when somebody needs to clone an organ and transplant. There are still a lot to think about.

#24 quote

The United Kingdom’s Human Fertilization and Embryology Bill, introduced into Parliament on the 8th of November 2007 contains a number of controversial proposals inter alia expressly permitting the creation of inter-species embryos for research and destruction and increasing the scope for human cloning also for destructive research. There are a lot of debate about the permission to create inter-species embryos and human clones is conducted upon the supposition that, whereas it would be unjust to do so for the purposes of achieving live births, it should be permissible to create such embryos for scientific research and destruction.
Dr Laing, Jacqueline A, Barrister High Court of Australia, Solicitor England and Wales Senior Lecturer has claimed in the article Issues and free movement and Gestation that “the interests of scientific research are such that there may well be pressure to bring human clones, hybrids and other compromised embryos to live birth. Confidence that the law can prohibit such gestation depends on a legal distinction between the embryos created for destructive research and the same for live birth”. (Laing, 11.) What the author said was how uncertain are any legal prohibitions on gestation. The laws they introduced will not supply the effective controls over this productive technology. There are many laws introduced recently about the technology such as cloning. Soem countries are trying to abandon the cloning technology because it violates the human rights; however, some countries used cloning technology to save other peoplo's life or do scientific research. In my opinion, it does not matter whether we should have the law or we should completely abandon cloning, every advanced technology has its good sides and bad sides, what matters is how poeple should deal with the technology.

#22 article 5

Today I read an article called we have lost our humanity, in this article; the author who is a doctor in New York has claimed that the effects of greed and technology on modern medicine has made people dehumanized. He talks about how a human being reaches the end of his or her life, but the family, or the nursing home, doesn't want the person to die there, so they ship the poor soul to the hospital. Whats more, the specialist in turn orders all sorts of expensive tests, procedures, maybe even surgery. All of which gets billed to Medicaid. In fact, this money could be better spent on lives that could be saved. Another article talked about how the Internet has made people lose their humanities. There is always some video going around whose calculated effect is nothing more or less than humiliation on a global scale. Technology, it seems, has unleashed ugliness in us. He also talks about nowadays, people could go through Facebook,  iPad, automated teller, self-serve, smartphone, e-mail for entire day without the bother of having to interact with each other.
With the development of the advanced technology, people, especially the teenagers have made full use of it and are enjoying the fast pace, giant information. But at the mean time, the concern which the author has put forward is seriously a issue right now. People are getting into the technology too much to forget how to actually communicate with others face to face. Back to the old days, people write letters to each other with their personal handwriting and their special greeting; however, few people are using letters when e-mail started getting popular. So it is a drawback for technology and we should think about how human beings should use the technology more correctly.

#21 article 4

When I think about the technologies that people benefit a lot from, there are lots of things jump out of my mind; however, there is one technology that I use it almost every single day and could not live without, which is the weather forecast. So I looked up on the computer and was trying to find out how the weather forecast technology has made people’s life easier. The article technology, corporation=accurate weather forecast said that due to advancement in computer technology and measuring devices, there are more accurate weather prediction than ever before.  Human beings have benefited from information gathered by weather satellites. The mass of information from the orbiting recording stations is now more efficiently handled. I also read another information chart which compares two ways of doing the weather prediction—the ancient way and the new way. Comparing the old and the new one, we could see that data is now collected and processed at a higher rate, the quality of data collected has considerably improved the level and rate of information transfer and communication has increased multi-fold. Thanks to the modern technology, nowadays, people use modern equipments such as remote sensing system, advanced radars, weather satellites, etc to make the weather report more accurate than before. For me, the weather forecast is a great technology; it makes our life a lot easier by knowing the weather ahead of time and be well prepared. There are other technologies that are quite convenient to people. So it is easier to find and feel the advantages of the technology.

#20 article 3

Unfortunately, I had a fever right before my 2 midterms and feel dizzy all day. I don’t really feel like doing homework, so this blog probably sounds no logic and was not well organized at all.
Anyhow, I read a very short article called Technology: good or bad. To be honest, this article doesn’t seem to be a very strong one and it only talked about very shallow aspects; however, I found out a point of view which could probably be used in my research paper. Considering the fact that everything has two sides, talking about how technology is whether good or bad itself is not enough and persuasive. So I am going to write about what is human beings’ reactions toward the technology, in other words, how do people decide to use the technology. There are lots of examples to discuss: people’s attitude to the household appliances, how people use the grammar check and spelling check in the computer. The more technology has been invented, the more people get greedy. It is our responsibility to decide whether the technology is good or harmful. For instance, China has issued Plastic Restriction Oder in 2008 because of plastic’s damage to the environment. If people realized how plastic is very hard to degrade, which damages the environment in the long run, they should give up using them even without the government’s order. Therefore, human beings have the responsibility to make full use of the technology with the minimum damage to the society and other people.

#19 Article 2

Today I have read the article how technology could contribute to the sustainable world; this is a fairly long article and talks about different sides of the technology. The article talks about the meanings of technology, the technological development and visions of technology in a sustainable world. Since it is a pretty long article, I read the “technological development” part and scanned the other parts of the article. It basically talks about different realms of the development of science and technology. The author focused on Biotechnology and Health technology, nanotechnology, information and communication technology, etc. He talked about how technology were been used in these fields and how there appears some ethical issues at the same time. For example, scientists are thinking about injecting human stem cells into the blood stream to rejuvenate human organs and thereby far extend longevity. All of these new technologies bring out controversial topics like people still hold different opinions about genetically modified organism.
After reading this article, I feel like my research topic is way too broad and not well written. I should focus on a more specific aspect. I am now thinking about dividing the technologies into several fields and discuss about how technology contributes to each area and how do people think of these developments. The technology used in the Dollhouse was regarded as a health and biotechnology because it could erase people’s memories in a minute. I could use this as a beginning to discuss how other biotechnologies affect human being’s life.

#18 artical1

In the article: Take the lazy way out? That’s too much work, the author talked about how the technology has made people lazier in today’s world. He thinks human being are pathetic because almost everybody is using spell check, grammar check in the computer and people are losing the capacity for correct word spelling and grammar. Technology has created a new standard, not of accuracy but of laziness and this makes people too lazy to take the lazy way out.
Talking about the bad sides of the technology, many people would probably think of the bombs, nuclear power, etc at first; however, there is another side that people may neglect---the laziness. The author acclaimed that Technology and laziness are locked in a vicious cycle. Technology has always promised to make people more productive and free us to think higher thoughts. Perversely, each innovation tempts us to further slack off. Considering this point, I could focus on how does technology provide human beings an opportunity to become lazy. The examples could be the invention of typos and grammar checks. I maybe become too radical about the bad sides of the technology, people would argue that everything has two sides; no one could promise the invention would be perfectly good for people. What I would like to write about is to do a research on how the technology is used to overcome laziness or discourage it.
Hopefully, I could get all the ideas together and write a nice research paper without being too radical about the technology.

# 17 sources

I am focusing my topic on how technology contributes to the human beings and the world. Technology is always a very controversial topic. The world has developed a lot thanks to the science and technology; however, it has its downside too. So I am going to talk about what are some good and bad things technologies have done.
After reading the comments on my prospectus, I came up with more ideas. First, I want to focus on how technology developed the world, for example, the inventions of the cell phones, cars, computers, etc. People take advantages of the technology and we have entered into the information era. Technologies not only give people convenience, but also give people hope when they suffer from disease. There are lots of new technology in the field of life sciences and medicine. Second, I would like to draw my attention to the inferior sides that technology does to the world: the inventions of bombs, nuclear power, plastic and clone. People are getting lazy when some kinds of cool technologies were invented such as calculators, computers with grammar check, cars, etc. People get too lazy and start to use these high techs instead of doing things on their own.
The two articles from the resource are talking about how technology has both good and bad sides. I also found an article talking about the limitations of email, text messages and technology.
I know this is a quite big topic and is fairly hard to focus. Hopefully, I could get these ideas all together and come up something nice.
The resources I am trying to use are listed as follow.

#16 prospectus

Since I have been watching the Dollhouse through last couple weeks, I chose the Dollhouse as my main source to write my research paper. From all the episodes of Season 1 of the Dollhouse, I picked scenes that have that all the dolls and Dominique were brought to the chair and get their memories wiped.
The main real world that I want to look into is “In what different ways does the technology contribute to our society?” Technology is always a very hot topic and it really contributes to the world in all kinds of ways, either good or bad. For example, the technologies used in the Dollhouse probably do more harm than good to people. So the sources that might help me to get more information are listed as follows.
Crovitz, L. Gordon. "Gordon Crovitz: Technology Predictions Are Mostly Bunk - WSJ.com."Business News & Financial News - The Wall Street Journal - WSJ.com. Web. 20 Jan. 2011. <http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704039704574616401913653862.html>.

Vergragt, Philip. How Technology Could Contribute to a Sustainable World. Tellus Institute(2008): n. pag. Web. 20 Jan. 2011.

When I typed “technology” into Google, there appears a lot of results. Above are some possible resources I found to support my argument. For example, there is an article talking about cloning and how two different groups hold different opinions about the first clone sheep “Dolly”. There are also couple articles which show that technology has two sides—good and bad, they argue it from different aspects, for instance one author said technology is a wonderful thing, people can have a cell phone with Internet access and computers with a search engine to know all the things you want. On the other hand, another author acclaimed that people hardly could make anything out of the technology. Hopefully, all of these different opinions could fit into my paper a I could come up with a nice research paper that combines all of these ideas together.

#15 Crammer

I have always been confused about the difference between “compare with” and “compare to”. I used to think they are substitutes for each other and I could either of them, which is wrong. I looked up the usage of these two phrases on the Internet and here they are.
According to the book Strunk and White:
To compare to is to point out or imply resemblances between objects regarded as essentially of a different order;
To compare with is mainly to point out differences between objects regarded as essentially of the same order.

According to AP Stylebook:
To compare to when the intent is to assert, without the need for elaboration, that two or more items are similar
To compare with when juxtaposing two or more items to illustrate similarities and/or: differences.

So, basically, the books are showing that “compare to” shows the similarity between the things you are comparing while “compare with” tells the differences between things are as important as the similarities.
Here are some examples on how to use “compare to “ and “compare with”.
1.       Thus, life has been compared to a pilgrimage, to a drama, to a battle; Congress may be compared with the British Parliament. Paris has been compared to ancient Athens; it may be compared with modern London.
2.       She compared her work for women’s rights to Susan B Anthony’s campaign for women’s suffrage.
3.       His time was 2:11:10 compared with 2:14 for his closest competitor.
PS, there is one more thing that need to know about is when “compare” is used intransitively, it should be followed by “with”.

#14 Re-watch Dollhouse 9

I have been watching the Dollhouse series for last couple weeks, so I decided to focus my topic on this show. The episode that I decided to re-watch and write about is the ninth episode of the Dollhouse. This episode talks about how Echo used her detective brain to find out that Dominique was the spy of the Dollhouse. After he was sent to Adelle, they had a little conversation that impressed me a lot. Adelle said that the purpose of the Dollhouse is to help people while Dominique said the Dollhouse was hurting people like Echo. Finally, Dominique was sent to the attic and was forced to erase his memory. The process of wiping Dominique’s memory is very painful to me. He was tied with his ropes and screamed desperately. I saw a helpless person who tried hard to escape but failed. They erased him.
The technology been used in the Dollhouse really sets me to think. How does technology been used to influence people’s daily life? Should some of the technology be constrained a little bit? Human beings could not live without technology and the world is developing rapidly with the help of science and technology; however, some new techs have been created some considerably damages like nuclear bomb. To some certain degree, technology used in the Dollhouse seems to hurt people in some ways. The show really ties the topic—technology and our daily life together. From past till now, science and technology is always a very hot topic to talk about.

#12 Dollhouse 9

In the ninth episode of the Dollhouse, Topher found a spy who tried to change his program. I have no idea who the spy would be and never thought there would be a spy in the Dollhouse at all. Eventually, Echo used her special skills and detective brain to find out that Dominique is the spy. I was shocked when I found out Dominique was the one who betrayed the Dollhouse because he always seems to care about the company and look after things really carefully. He has been an assistant of Adelle for three years and never was doubted before.
There is one scene that impressed me a lot is when Dominique was forced to get on to the memory-wiping chair, erase his memory and is ready to be sent to attic. That scene is one of the cruelest scenes I have watched so far. Four or five big guys corded Dominique and tried to press him on the chair. The screaming, the death struggle and the lighting make me see the darkest side of the Dollhouse—forcing people to erase their memory. There is a little conversation before Dominique was been wiped:
“I trusted you with a gift.”
“Dollhouse is not a gift.”
“I think the countless people who need help would disagree with you.”
“How about countless people you have hurt?”
Dominique was afraid what is going to happen after Rossum let the Dollhouse slip from his grasp. The dolls maybe turn to evils and ruin the whole world. Everything he was worried about makes sense. This is probably what other people think about the Dollhouse.

#12 Dollhouse 8

This episode of the Dollhouse is completely different from the ones I have watched. In this episode, Echo, Sierra, November and Victor woke up with their memories before joining the Dollhouse and they tried to escape from the Dollhouse. I got a feeling that these dolls would remember their former life, know what the Dollhouse has done to them (wipe their memories) and decide to go against them, but I didn’t expect this coming so fast. I feel happy for the opportunity they got to escape from Dollhouse; however, as the show went on, I found out all these memory-recovering were made up purposely by Adelle.
Adelle, as the woman who is in charge of the Dollhouse was worried about Echo after several unusual reactions happened to her. As a result, she decided to give what the dolls want in order to wipe their memories much more thoroughly.  In the Dollhouse, there are normal people who work in different departments and help to set up the Dollhouse, there are also people, or should I call them dolls instead who only have the human bodies without minds. People like Adelle, Dominique or Topher could easily control the dolls and make them do anything by the technologies, they could wipe memory every time they completed a mission, they could set up a trap and make the dolls fall into it, they could watch the dolls escaping and said “here we go” with a smile, showing that everything is under her control. The dolls fight so hard to get out of the Dollhouse, but unfortunately, they all fell into Adelle’s trap. When I saw them failed and were brought back to the Dollhouse, I feel like they have returned to their miserable life again.

# 11 Dollhouse 7

In this episode, the Dollhouse is faced with very serious issue about the drug that spread throughout the campus. Knowing that the drug would seriously kill the students on campus, the Dollhouse decided to send all the dolls except Echo to find out the drug before hurting anyone. As a matter of fact, it is Echo who eventually saved the whole Dollhouse and the campus.
It surprises me when Sam drugged Echo in the lab. All I think about Sam is the guy who wants to help his friend and find out who got the drug; however, it is he who is behind everything and tries to get the money by inventing the drug. Obviously, Sam is eaten up with money and money makes him forget what is right and what is wrong. We have to admit that greed is one of the human natures. Most people want to win a billion prizes in a lottery before they think of it as doing a charity; most people never are content with things they are, they always want more and more. Sometimes, greed is a god thing which it promotes you to pursue more in your life, but on the other hand, greed has a darker side as well. When someone builds his greed on other’s pain or even life, it violates morality. Just like Sam, when he thinks of how much money and benefit he could get from making the drug, he lost his morality and exchange money with people’s life. Greed is dreadful when people cannot control it and cross the line.

#10 Dollhouse E6

In the sixth episode of Dollhouse, there appear more characters besides Echo and some surprising scenes. I could feel that the show is getting more interesting and tense.
In this episode, Mellie and Paul play a major part. What I think about them is that they make a cute couple. Mellie is a lovely woman and is always taking care of Paul. She believes Paul when he said that Dollhouse exists, she made cookies and dinners for him…. As far as I can see, she is just a girl lives next door to Paul and has a crush on him. I actually regard her as a very tiny part in this show just because she doesn’t involve in any Dollhouse business or investigating the Dollhouse. Especially, when Adelle asked Joe to kill Mellie because she knows too much about the Dollhouse, I feel sorry for her for being dragged into the Dollhouse. However, to my surprise, at the moment when Joe almost killed her, the call from Adelle made her change completely with fierce looking eyes and strong power and eventually killed Joe.
I started thinking that maybe Mellie is someone important who just pretends she is an outsider, instead, she knows everything. I got a feeling that she might be a doll as well because her reaction when she heard Adelle was exactly the same when Echo was in any task. What’s more, when she killed Joe, she began to panic and acted like a completely different person. I am now looking forward to what is happening to her in the following shows, and I am also very surprised about how the Dollhouse actually knows everything and they have already settled them.

#9 Dollhouse 5

In this episode of Dollhouse, Echo was assigned to get into a religious group and find out some criminal evidence.  She was programmed as a blind believer and had the mini camera hidden in her brain to search the evidence.
As a matter of fact, I was amazed how people use all kinds of technologies and how well they handle them. They could easily wipe people’s memories off and make them become whoever they want, having all kind of personalities and skills. Now, Echo was made to be a blind person and have a camera stuck in her brain. Technology just makes all these things happen and make the dollhouse exist.
A lot of people say that technology is a double-edged sword, it could make life a lot more convenient and interesting while let some people take advantage of it and do bad things. I could not say the dollhouse has completely take advantage of the technology, but they have used it to expand their business and do something which goes against the human nature. Everything could be fixed or erased in their life, the memories, the strong bodies, etc. Anything that is precious and valuable enough for some people to spend their whole life to pursue it appears valueless for the dollhouse because it only takes them a minute or two to get that. I remembered Adelle always say that “dolls are not supposed to have feelings.” The technology makes the dolls lose the most precious thing in their life even though they are always stunning outside and own lot of things other girls would die for.
Technology has done a great job to develop our society. However, whether it is a good idea to use the advanced technology in to places like dollhouse still remains to be seen.

#8 Highschool is hell

Since I have never watched the show “Buffy the vampire slayer,” I was not sure if I could get what the article is talking about, however, after reading the “Highschool is hell,” I followed what the article very well and she has done a great job to anaylize the show for people who don’t know.  Obvioulsy,  this is a perfect example for me to see what a research paper should be look like and what I should write about.
I think the most challenge part is to pick out a scene and find something that I will be interested in and also something is related to the real world. The author chose the “Metaphor” as her central topic for the research paper. She focused on how there appear to be more fear and threats in the society and how metaphor became a popular culture to address and response to the fears. I have to say it is a quite unique respect and would perfectly relate the show and the real world together. To write a unique and interesting topic is a very difficult process. It takes a lot of time to pick a short scene or even one minute scene from the whole show.  I also have to be sensitive about what is worth writing and what has more to write about. As a matter of fact, every single scene has something that we could dig deep inside and discuss about it, but we usually focus on the main character only and neglect other characters or even objects around.
Well, it takes some time to develop the sensitive ability to choose a nice topic, however, watching more episodes will give me more background information and hopefully I could catch a moment to write about.

#7 Episode 3 dollhouse

In the fourth episode of Dollhouse, I could feel that the show is getting more interesting. Echo started losing all her memory and seemed to fail the mission. She is not a doll that could have everything she wants and get all the tasks done perfectly anymore.
One thing that sets me to think is how people would react when they suddenly lose all their memories. Just by looking at Echo’s expression before and after she lost her memory, I have to say that it is so sad to suddenly forget everything and behave like an innocent child. Echo was so charming and energetic before the accident, she knew how the mission works and everything is under her control, however, after she lost her memory, she lost all of those and her expression just seem to say that “what is going on and who am I?” This part of the episode reminds of some similar scenes in other shows when people get an accident and they lost all their memories. I can feel their painfulness from their faces. Even though, people sometimes would rather forget all the sad things, it is not a good choice to forget everything. The dolls like Echo have to wipe their memories off every time after their task, which makes me feel like they only have the bodies but not the minds to be real people.
The dollhouse is getting more interesting as Echo started to be out of control and the appearance of Alpha. It seems that the Dollhouse has a lot to do with Alpha. It is going to be get more clear in next few episodes.

#6 Dollhouse 3

Since I was uncertain about whether the Dollhouse is doing people any good or not, I kept on watching it and found out that Echo is starting to have her own ideas and thoughts.
In the last couple episodes, Echo was assigned to join the Dollhouse and took on to the missions. All of her memories would be deleted right after every task and she would become anybody and have any skills that the task requires. All what they need to do is putting some program into her brain. In this episode, she was programmed to be a backup singer and a body guard to protect Rayna from shooting as well. At the same time, Sierra was assigned the task and was programmed as a big fan of Rayna. What I found interesting about this episode is how Echo could handle this case in her own way. When Brink input the program in her brain, he missed some situations which accidentally just happened. Rayna actually did not want to live. Echo supposed to fail the task; however, she started having her own thoughts and found out a solution to complete the mission perfectly. It is not normal for a doll to have her own thoughts and this makes Adelle and Laurence have opposite ideas about whether they should still keep Echo or not. What’s more, when Sierra smiled to Echo when they walked by, Echo glanced at her and seemed to say “Don’t get too close to me, they will find out.” It is obvious that Echo began to have her memory even after the treatment, which makes the shows more interesting.

#5 Dollhouse 2

In the first episode of Dollhouse, Echo was asked to deal with a kidnapping case. I can feel that they are working hard and trying to help that little girl. In that situation, they are actually doing others a favor. But in the second episode, Echo was assigned the task to play hunter game with an insane person—Richard. The game was dangerous and brutal; Echo was trying hard to escape. It is sad to know that Adelle would not miss any business and put her into the hunter game.
There is another character that attracts me is Boyd. He seems to disagree with some part of the business Dollhouse is doing, for example, girls like Echo was chose to join Dollhouse and complete any mission that Adelle was asked to. He is very loyal to Echo, just as how Echo trusts him with her life. Throughout the whole cruel mission, I still found something that is more than business, which is loyalty and trust between Boyd and Echo.
I have not figured out clearly how Dollhouse does their business yet and weather it does any good to other people and the girls in the Dollhouse at all or not. We will see more in next few episodes.
