#16 prospectus

Since I have been watching the Dollhouse through last couple weeks, I chose the Dollhouse as my main source to write my research paper. From all the episodes of Season 1 of the Dollhouse, I picked scenes that have that all the dolls and Dominique were brought to the chair and get their memories wiped.
The main real world that I want to look into is “In what different ways does the technology contribute to our society?” Technology is always a very hot topic and it really contributes to the world in all kinds of ways, either good or bad. For example, the technologies used in the Dollhouse probably do more harm than good to people. So the sources that might help me to get more information are listed as follows.

When I typed “technology” into Google, there appears a lot of results. Above are some possible resources I found to support my argument. For example, there is an article talking about cloning and how two different groups hold different opinions about the first clone sheep “Dolly”. There are also couple articles which show that technology has two sides—good and bad, they argue it from different aspects, for instance one author said technology is a wonderful thing, people can have a cell phone with Internet access and computers with a search engine to know all the things you want. On the other hand, another author acclaimed that people hardly could make anything out of the technology. Hopefully, all of these different opinions could fit into my paper a I could come up with a nice research paper that combines all of these ideas together.

  1. You seem to be saying that through the ninth episode, the writers of “Dollhouse” are arguing that technology can have detrimental effects to society and can be used for the wrong reasons, as demonstrated by some scenes in this episode.
The main evidence for this argument seems to be the scene wherein the dolls and Dominic’s memories were wiped.
This argument is timely because modern technology continues to develop more and more, and there have been many cases wherein technology has been used for destruction, harming people, and violating their rights. These issues have brought about much controversy, so it will be relatively easy to find evidence.
Have you thought about connecting this argument to the use of advanced weaponry and bombs in ongoing wars?
This is how I see these two things connecting: the episode shows technology as harmful to the dolls and that they abused it by “wiping” dominic which could damage him as well. The use of technology to create arms of mass destruction is very controversial because the use of this could destroy a lot and kill many people.
I think analyzing this episode and advanced weaponry together could be fruitful because both of them have pros and cons, but the cons mostly outweigh the pros making it easier to defend.

  2. You seem to be saying that though: Spy in the House of Love”. The writer of the “Spy in the House of Love “is arguing of how the dollhouse deals with somebody that sell the company out. Mr. Dominic has been erasers all him memories at the end of this episode. Technology plays a very important role in this drama. All dolls need the memory technology to get perfect.
The main evidence for this argument seems to be they put Mr. Dominic on the chair and let him has his first treatment. They also put Echo on the chair in this episode. Comparing with Echo, Mr. Dominic’s first treatment looks really painful, just like Echo saw Sierra’s first treatment in the earlier episode.
The argument is timey because there are a lot of technologies in our lives. When we enjoy those technologies, we also need to pay attention on the bad sides of technologies. Have you thought about argue those bad sides that people never pay attentions on?, such as too much technologies makes people lazy. For example, there are all functions in your calculator, so student do not need to remember those functions any more, and student cannot solve problems without calculator. This is how I think these two things connecting: Technologies make people’s life easy, but also makes people lazy. I think analyzing this episode and “lazy life” together can be very fruitful because most people like to argue big topic about technologies’ bad side, but not too much people talks about those small changes in our daily lives.

  3. Making an argument about the advantages and disadvantages of technology is of course a great one. Since Dollhouse is sci-fi, there is without a doubt usage of technology. Referencing the conversation between Adelle and Dominque provides a very strong start to your claims. However, it is very controversial. On one hand, the Dolls (and anyone who gets their memory wiped) can be a very painful experience and it is bad for that particular individual. However, on the other hand, when that particular individual is imprinted with a new personality they can do a lot of good. Imprinting the dolls does make them experts at whatever they are needed for which is good for various situations. A good example of this is in the episode where Echo is negotiating with a kidnapper. One specific thing that could be researched is airport security. With more and more threats, airport security is becoming more invasive than ever before. Security officials can rifle through your belongings as they please and invade your privacy. They recently added new machines that can scan your entire body. This could provide good support because the security measures are protecting the national security. However, in order to do so they must strip the rights of the people who are flying. So is that a good thing or a bad thing? Drawing from real world claims like how technology led to the creation of bombs is good support for your argument. Finding the right real world examples to research will make writing 7 pages a breeze!
